Nigel was my friend and helped me with my early Crow genealogy research. He created manxroots.info to share what he had found in Isle of Man records and help members of his extended family connect with one another.

These are the surviving pages of the archive Nigel built before his death. I’ve brought them together here so his work can still be read and used by anyone tracing Manx families, places, and records.

The collections below take you into Nigel’s research, from Crowe and Quine family histories to parish marriages, rent rolls, and the early House of Keys.

Manannan’s Choice of the Year

In 2022, Culture Vannin awarded Nigel the Reih Bleeaney Vanannan (RBV), the Isle of Man’s highest cultural honour. The award recognised the way he shared his research into family history, land records, and the island’s historic landscape.

Nigel grew up in the East Baldwin Valley and worked as a chartered surveyor. He helped found the Isle of Man Family History Society and served as president of the Isle of Man Natural History and Antiquarian Society. His interests extended to music, too. He sang at the Manx Music Festival and helped preserve its recordings.

Nigel chose the Manx Y-DNA Study to receive the £500 donation that accompanied his award.
